Thalia is a beautiful yacht built by G F Wanhill at Poole in 1889.
Her hull is carvel built of oak frames and oak and pitch pine
planking with bronze fasteners.
She is cutter rigged with gaff sails.
Thalia went to Ireland in 1891 until 1914, where there are records
of Thalia racing in the archives of the Royal Cork Yacht Club from
1891-96.
Thalia was based on the Thames from 1914 -1963.
In the 1960s she sailed to Turkey and the African coast returning in
the 1970s.
A rebuild was started in the late 1980s, and then abandoned with no
deck.
She was about to be broken up when present owners bought her in
1993.
Thalia was first registered in 1889 and she appears to be the only
remaining yacht built by the Wanhills yard of Poole.
Wanhills had a reputation of building yachts from the 1850s until
the 1890s.
Three of the twelve yachts racing in the first Americas cup race of
1851 were built by Wanhill; their most successful being Egira built
in 1865 who won the Queens Cup in Cowes seven times.
The techniques that Wanhill used to build successful racing yachts
are evident in Thalia, such as keeping the weights out of the end of
the boat.
He achieved this by tapering the planking from 2inch thick at the
center bottom to 1inch thick at the counter and stem, framing in
pairs of 5inch by 4inch at the keel to 2inch by 2inch at the deck
level.
From 1890 to 1918 Thalia was in Ireland where she raced with success
out of the Royal Cork Yacht Club.
She was later based in Essex until the 19 sixties when she appeared
in a breakers yard in Southampton with damage to the starboard bow.
She was salvaged at the age of seventy, still in her original state
and sailed to the Mediterranean and the west coast of Africa.
In the seventies Thalia was sailed back to England and spent several
years in Southampton, until she was taken to the Coombes boatyard in
Bosham where work started.
The deck and several frames and planks were removed, until the owner
ran out of money.
Consequently she sat in the yard for three years until her present
owner who had been contemplating buying her for some time,
discovered that she was about to be broken up and the original parts
would be sold.
This was the start of a four year restoration project.
Since that time she has cruised and raced as a family boat around
the south coast of England until her longest voyage from the Solent
to the West Indies in 2007.
She is now possibly the oldest yacht to have crossed the Atlantic.
In nearly 120 years Thalia's name and her use have remained
unchanged.
Much of the boat's interior is still in its original form.
The panelling in the saloon along with the hatches, fittings and the
willow patterning in the heads are original as they were in 1889.
Thalia is also prestigiously registered with the UK National
Maritime museum, as a vessel of historic importance.
She has her name on the walls of the Royal Cork Yacht club.
